Because the words kept taking the shape of a child’s recitation, rather than a courier’s clear-minded account of facts, Tom had long been at his letter — and with little to show for it, when there was a bellow of “Oy, Master,” from the common room, and Nick Skeres barged into the Dolphin’s little parlour.

Tom looked up in irritation, ready to tongue-lash the lad — and stopped short. Nick Skeres stood there, puffing and red-faced, waving a hand as he caught his breath.

“Next time you want someone fetched, you go yourself,” the lad gasped. “See if you find ’em alive!”

“Have you dropped your wits in the harbour, Nick Skeres?” Tom asked, halfway between stern and disbelieving.

And Skeres, of course, had to shake his head — most Minotaurish — as though the question had been in earnest. “Not I, I didn’t,” he said. “’Tis Dennis as dropped ’imself, wits and all.”

“Jack Dennis!” This could not be, could it? The chair screeched on the scrubbed floor and the rushlight danced madly when Tom rose to his feet, quill still in hand. This could not be…

“They fished ’im out, drowned like a cat.” The lad swallowed hard. “Mas-tro Pa-o-lo’s fit for the Bedlam.”

This jolted Tom’s mind into a run. “Citolini is there? Did he send for me?”

Skeres snorted. “My eyeballs on an Italian fork, that’s what ’e’ll send for. ’E didn’t want you around, that one.”

How very much like Citolini! “Good lad, Dolius.” Tom slapped Nick Skeres on the shoulder, and only paused to pick up his unfinished letter, shaking it to dry the ink as he went… Oh, what did it matter! He folded it carelessly, and thrust it into his sleeve. If half of what Nick Skeres blathered was true, he’d have a whole different letter to write — or perhaps none at all.
